While we were optimistic earlier this year of having our obon, the fact is that covid cases are still high here on Maui, and the CDC considers all counties in Hawaii at high risk. As a result, the Board of Directors of Rinzai Zen Mission decided to cancel our obon festival for this year. However, we will have obon service only on Saturday, August 20th for members and their families at 12:00 noon.
Reverend Seiya Chisaka will preside over the service while he and his family are here visiting from Japan. Masks are required inside the temple. Viewing of the service will be available via Zoom to anyone unable to attend in person, including our ministers in Japan. Viewing will also be available downstairs at the temple.

Any member wishing to participate in their family’s hatsubon (those who have lost a loved one within the past year) may contact me at (808) 281-7181 and make arrangements to be recognized during the service.
Preceding the service at 10:30 a.m., we will have a luncheon. Our Temple will provide the main entrees, and we are requesting participants to bring a potluck dish to share.
Reverend Gisyu Kawakita will be visiting with us for the month of August and will be able to perform services at our temple. In the meantime, Reverend Chisaka continues his search for a new minister for our congregation.
After thirty plus years, the stairways to the temple and to our minister’s residence were deteriorating, posing a safety hazard. We have completed the much-needed repairs to the three stairways at a cost of $44,000. We humbly ask for donations to defray the cost of this expenditure. The stairs are now in the process of being painted by volunteers, and we are very grateful to Ameritone Maui for their donation of all the paint.

You must use your Maika`i Card to make a donation. Foodland and the Western Union Foundation will match a portion of customer donations up to $249 per organization. If you do not have a Maika`i Card, apply for one; it’s free. No purchases are required.
Keep your receipt for your tax records. You may ask for a duplicate receipt and send it to Rinzai Zen Mission to be acknowledged. Be sure your receipt shows our organization name – RINZAI ZEN MISSION.
