May 2022 Rinzai Maui Zen Mission Newsletter

Aloha Everyone,

Here are the latest updates on our Temple:

  • We are looking to formally commit to our Obon Festival by the end of June and will be welcoming Reverend Gisyu Kawakita for the month of August. Reverend Chisaka and family and Reverend Hoshi and family are also expected for a few days in August along with Reverend Kajiro. We are also looking forward to Reverend Yamaguchi’s son Jesse and his wife Charlotte and Reverend’s daughter Mika coming home for a visit in August.
  • Many thanks to Maui Zendo for paying for the replacement of the sliding screen doors at the Temple. Also, Maui Zendo will be holding an orientation to Zen at the Temple on Saturday, May 21st from 9 a.m. until noon. Maui Zendo’s teacher, Michael Kieran, will share the foundations of the practice as well as work with individual participants in finding a comfortable meditation position. Anyone interested in participating may send an email to
  • We were very fortunate to receive a generous donation from Myoshinji Temple to help pay for the maintenance of our facilities which includes the repair of the stairways at our Temple. The stairway repairs will begin this month. Although we are looking forward to holding our Obon festivities this year, we remain anxious as covid persists. I will update everyone as we move forward to reaching our goal.
