The past two years have been very challenging for all of us here at Rinzai Zen Mission dealing with the covid situation and the passing of Reverend Yamaguchi.

As covid cases are on the decline and County and State restrictions are being relaxed, we are hopeful that the covid history will not be repeating itself and that we will be able to welcome back our more “normal” lifestyles.

Consequently, it was decided to move forward with celebrating Hanamatsuri on Sunday, April 3rd, at our Temple. There will be a catered luncheon at 11:00 a.m. underneath the Temple followed by an in-Temple Zoom service from Japan at 1:00 p.m. Mask wearing inside the Temple is strongly encouraged due to safety concerns for some of our members. The Zoom ID# is 2269813784 and Pass Code # is 096624. Please make a note of these numbers as the same ones will be used for any future Zoom services.

We are also planning to hold our O’Bon Festival on Saturday, August 20th, dependent on the covid situation at that time. More details will be coming as we get closer to the date.

A visiting monk will be arriving from Japan and staying at our Temple for the month of August. Reverend Seiya Chisaka and his family are also planning a visit to the Temple sometime in August whether or not we hold our O’Bon Festival.

The search for a new minister is ongoing. Reverend Chisaka will be interviewing a potential candidate in April to see if he would be interested in coming to our Temple on a 2-year student visa.

Many thanks to Naomi, who continues to reside at the Temple with her boyfriend until our search for a new minister is resolved.

Cleaning day at the Temple is still held the second Sunday of every month beginning at 8:00 a.m. as well as Maui Zendo’s cleaning the last Monday of every month.

Thank you to everyone who has already sent their membership dues and donations. As a reminder, it’s $120 for a family and $60 for individuals. We are grateful for your continued support of Rinzai Zen Mission.

In Gassho,

Alan Nago
President, Board of Directors
